"All my buddies think we all can golf the rest of our days," Barch said. "It’s not like that. For me, personally, I know I’m very lucky to have made what I’ve made. … I understand that I’m not an everyday person. But at the same time, the amount of money I make isn’t going to last the rest of my life. That’s all I was saying.

"The owners, their lifestyle isn’t going to change [because of a lockout]. It was more comparing owners and players, not myself and what my dad does. … [With a lockout] you have to prepare for the worst.

"My wife and I prepared for this financially a long time ago. So we’re fine for the whole year … if it comes to that. But it’s definitely not fun."

Wayne Gretzky thinks there will be hockey in the New Year.

Wayne Gretzky said Monday that he believes the league's current lockout will end before the showcase Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs.

"I believe in my heart, maybe because I'm such a big hockey fan, that they will be playing by Jan. 1," said Gretzky during a question and answer period at a panel discussion on personal finance. "I think the hard part of their deal was the last negotiations (in 2004) of players agreeing to a salary cap.

"Now that there is a salary cap in place, and revenue sharing, I see them ultimately getting a deal done here and I see them playing hockey this year."

The Philadelphia Flyers are honoring Jessi.

Earlier this month, Maslany, 26, was awarded the Jessica Redfield internship from the Flyers, topping an impressive field of applicants. Like Redfield, Maslany is outgoing, loves sports, and doesn't back down from challenges.

"We saw a lot of Jessica's qualities in her," said Brian Smith, the Flyers' manager of broadcasting and media services.

Ever since Maslany began working for the Flyers, the Temple senior has been in frequent contact with Redfield's mother, Sandy Phillips, on Twitter and Facebook, in e-mails, and on the phone.

Scott Gomez won't be an Ace.

Mid-afternoon Friday, Canadiens centreman Scott Gomez was reported by RDS and then Canadian Press to be contracted to play his lockout hockey with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL, where he suited up during the 2004-05 lockout.

But shortly after 5 pm ET, while participating in a children’s charity event in Alaska, Gomez texted The Gazette’s Dave Stubbs to say there was "no truth to that at all," and that he was grateful to be skating with the Aces as a means to stay fit.

"One hundred per cent I’m not playing here" during the lockout, Gomez texted from his native state.
