There was a fairly big trade last night.

Thomas Vanek is gone, and the Buffalo Sabres’ rebuild is in full swing.

The Sabres traded their co-captain and one of their franchise players to the New York Islanders on Sunday night for left-winger Matt Moulson, a first-round pick in the 2014 draft and a second-round pick in 2015. It’s not a deal that makes Buffalo better now, but amid a 2-10-1 start, it’s a step toward the future.

Some of the notes from the Avalanche - Hurricane game last night are interesting.

NOTES: Winnipeg C Olli Jokinen played in his 1,100th NHL game. … Duchene matched Joe Sakic and Chris Stewart for the most goals scored in the month of October in a season since the team moved from Quebec. Sakic scored nine in 1997, and Stewart matched it three years later. … The Avalanche have killed 18 straight penalties.
