Varly hearing nets little new news

Doug Pensinger

According to this article in the Post, Semyon Varlamov's hearing today served little purpose but to kick the proverbial can down the road until January. The quick and dirty facts:

  • Bond continued over until January.  This means he can continue to travel with the team.
  • Restraining order remains in place.
  • Varlamov has the opportunity to enter a plea on January 22.
  • He wore a blue suit.

According to district attorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough, defendants working and traveling under the umbrella of a misdemeanor is not unusual.  Settling with a negotiated plea in such a case is also pretty common according to Kimbrough.

Varly's Olympic dream may need to now involve a preliminary step of petitioning the court to allow him to travel to Russia for the games.  That all depends on how long the court proceedings stretch out as the Winter Games are scheduled to run from February 7th to the 23rd.
