Until further notice the NHL arenas are going on higher alert, be warned that there will be longer security lines and that you should show up earlier to get in.
The National Hockey League is ramping up security at its rinks in the wake of the explosions at the Boston Marathon Monday.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly responded “yes,” in an email to QMI Agency when asked if the league is increasing security at its games.
“We have coordinated with all of the buildings in which NHL games are being played and appropriate steps are being taken to ensure the buildings are secure and safe,” wrote Daly.
The Boston game was - rightly in my opinion - postponed. SBN NHL readers and commentators went to our Sister site in Boston, it was the best way to support each other.
The NHL postponed Monday night's Boston Bruins game against the Ottawa Senators at TD Garden because of the Boston Marathon bombings.
No makeup date has been scheduled, and no other games around the country were immediately called off.
Major League Baseball said no changes were planned to ceremonies at ballparks around the country to commemorate Jackie Robinson Day. Spokesman Pat Courtney said several teams informed the league they planned moments of silence.
Jiggy does not regret his rant.
As for his rant, well, he wouldn’t change a word.
“It’s too easy to look back and say, ‘I regret it and I’m sorry,”‘ said Giguere, who was starting in goal Monday night against a Columbus team that’s still in the thick of the playoff chase. “Too many people do that. Once you said it, you have to assume it. … The overall message that I wanted to throw out there I’m not disappointed with.”
Giguere’s message was clearly received by his teammates. They understood his irritation because many felt it, too. This is a team that ended the Chicago Blackhawks’ NHL record streak of earning at least one point in the first 24 games and then followed it up by knocking off San Jose on Matt Duchene’s goal just before the horn sounded to end overtime.
Lastly Craig MacTavish is back with the Oilers.
Cleverly, MacTavish characterized himself as “an impatient guy,” and said he would “bring that impatience to this situation. I think we’re at the stage, in terms of the cycle of our hockey club right now, that we have to do some bold things. We have to expose ourselves to some semblance of risk, to try and move the team forward in a rapid fashion.”
If so, the Oilers could be in for volatile and interesting days ahead.
They could, for example, make their first choice in the 2013 entry draft available for trade to get some of the depth and experience MacTavish wants to add. It may well be that one of their primary pieces – a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, a Jordan Eberle, a Nail Yakupov, a Sam Gagner – will be dangled on the open market. Or more likely an Ales Hemsky.
