What are your thoughts on hybrid icing? It might happen next season.

Hybrid icing could be on its way to the NHL.

The league’s general managers met Wednesday and embraced many of the changes recommended by the competition committee, including hybrid icing and the mandatory use of visors for all players entering the league.

A blend of touch and no-touch icing that offers referees the discretion to blow a play dead will be in effect during the 2013-14 preseason. If the experiment is successful, hybrid icing will be implemented for the regular season, pending a vote by the NHL’s board of governors.

The Boston - Chicago game once again went to overtime.

The Boston Bruins' comeback fell short this time. And suddenly the Stanley Cup final is a lot more interesting.

Brent Seabrook scored at 9:51 of overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 6-5 win over the never-say-die Bruins in a wild game Wednesday night. The defenceman's shot through traffic that beat Boston goalie Tuukka Rask gives the Blackhawks, who never trailed in the game, a new lease of life.

The teams are now tied at 2-2 heading into Saturday's Game 5 in Chicago (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 7:30 p.m. ET). And Boston's momentum, from two straight wins built on prickly defence, has been arrested.

Would you want Briere?

A person familiar with discussions confirms Danny Briere is set to become a free agent after the Philadelphia Flyers informed the veteran forward they intend to buy out the final two years of his contract.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Wednesday because the Flyers have not announced their decision. ESPN.com first reported Briere’s pending buyout Tuesday evening.
