Pepsi Center gets digital overhaul

Ever visit the Can and become frustrated because you couldn't see the controversial goal due to a failed pixel on the jumbotron? Fear not as you will face that problem no more.

The Avalanche moved into the newly constructed Pepsi Center about 15 years ago. The jumbotron hanging from the rafters was a thing of beauty. Sadly, that beauty collected 15 years of dust, making it an obsolete dinosaur. Until now. I'm happy to report that the dinosaur has gone the way of all the other dinos.

Fans never thought it would happen, but it has. Rejoice in the fact that you will be seeing hockey in HD quality the next time the Avs drop the puck at the Pepsi Center. Some details about the new system:

  • largest indoor jumbotron of its kind in the world (yup, you read that right)
  • four large screens: two facing center seating areas (27’ x 48’); two facing each end (21’ x 25’)
  • over 8.5 million pixels
  • 1080p full HD screen that spans both blue lines
  • capable of handling limitless configurations for displaying live action, game statistical information and animations
  • operated within a newly-built HD production control facility
  • manufactured and installed by Daktronics of Brookings, S.D.

The scoreboard isn't the only new addition to the arena, however. A new sound system is also being installed.

  • 43 four-channel amplifiers rated at 9600 watts each for a total of 412,800 watts
  • new loudspeakers consist of six line arrays that are 20 feet high and include four subwoofers mounted behind each array
  • loudspeakers have max power handling capability of 1,600 watts each
  • subwoofers have max power handling capability of 2,400 watts each
  • separate digital signal processors are used for configuring the system
  • computer monitored
  • 3D acoustic modeling system that accurately predicts the sound coverage, intelligibility and levels
  • designed by WJHW; installed by LVW Electronics

“We are excited to bring a new standard of excellence to our fans’ experience when attending events at Pepsi Center,” said Josh Kroenke, President of the Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets. “The new scoreboard, sound system and the technological improvements that come with each installation will provide fans with one of the best audiovisual presentations in all of sports.”

Now if they'd only do something about the music selection.
