Toronto Maple Leafs winger David Clarkson is at risk of incurring a 10-game suspension from the National Hockey League for leaving the bench during a wild brawl in the third period of a pre-season game, a punishment that would deprive the team of its most celebrated off-season acquisition.
It all began midway through the third period on Sunday night, with the Leafs hosting the Buffalo Sabres on the back end of a home-and-home. Sabres forward Corey Tropp was led off the ice, dazed and bloody, after a fight with Leafs hopeful Jamie Devane.

Willie Mitchell returns to NHL action in an exhibition game in Denver Friday night against the Colorado Avalanche after he was sidelined with a troublesome knee injury for 15 months.
At 36, the thoughtful Los Angeles Kings defenceman could have packed it in. A concussion kept him out of hockey for second-half of the 2009-10 season and the entire playoffs. He has won a Stanley Cup championship. In fact, the last time he played in a meaningful game was when the Kings beat the New Jersey Devils, and Mitchell was overcome by emotion.
Gagner won't start for the Oilers.
Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gagner will miss the start of the regular season with a broken jaw.
Gagner suffered the injury in Edmonton’s 5-2 exhibition win over Vancouver on Saturday. He collided on the side boards with Vancouver’s Zack Kassian, and Kassian’s stick knocked out some of Gagner’s teeth. Kassian received a four-minute penalty on the play.
The 24-year-old Gagner, out indefinitely, had 14 goals and 38 points in 48 games with the Oilers last season. He has 91 goals and 167 assists in 414 games over six seasons in Edmonton.
