Final Grades 2014: Jamie McGinn, #11

Versatile, albeit inconsistent, McGinn put in a season worthy of a new contract with the Avs. Now if only the Avs can keep a healthy top six so that Fatty can man the third line like he's built to.

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

Jamie McGinn is a hockey fan's nightmare. Some nights, he's a world beater, gobbling up the goals like they're donuts at a buffet. He can go on streaks where he's utterly useless, though, and you find yourself screaming at the TV, willing him to do...something. Many people expected him to shine in the playoffs, putting in a T.J. Galiardicus type performance. But again, he was that guy in between the second and third lines.

SteveHouse: Honestly, McGinn frustrates me. He'll go on a tear and SCORE ALL THE GOALS and then we won't see him at all for three weeks.

c6hor8: I though McGinn was okay this year. He moved up and down a lot but he still was hot and cold.

Sandie: I really like Ginner. He has to have some of the worst aim in the league though. I mean, seriously, I didn't even know someone *could* hit a post that often!

Mike: I want so much more for you Jamie.  Why won't you turn a corner? Not in top 10 on PP or PK.  That's the definition of a tweener.  Good, but not great.

SteveHouse: he played pretty well but ultimately suffered the fate of not being a more talented player than he is. loved the effort level from him but he is not a top forward, I'm sorry.

c6hor8: Meh.

mfured20: Jamie McGinn had a pretty good playoffs.  I was surprised at how he upped his game.

Mike: Saw flashes, but so inconsistent.  13 hits and when he was allowed to, was a damn good forechecker. Finished 5th in playoff points with 2 G/3A.

Preseason Thoughts

Cheryl: Biggest letdown is going to Fatty McGinn. He had a great run in his first stint with the Avs after the trade. Last year, we saw him fall back to earth. Yes, he'll get some of those post shots to go in (low hanging fruit), but I don't think enough will hit twine to put him back on that post-trade pace. I think we'll see exactly what we got in McGinn: a third-liner with the ability to pot some goals here and there. It's a great thing that's the role he's been given this season. So in that sense, he'll live right up to expectations.
