Final Grades 2014: Gabe Landeskog, #92

The Captain really started to show some leadership and looked much more comfortable with that C riding his chest.

Doug Pensinger

What a season for Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog. His chemistry with Paul Stastny was a thing of beauty, and when Nathan MacKinnon was added to the mix...well, you got things like this.

Not only was he producing offensively at a high level, he and his linemates regularly faced the toughest competition and got the hardest defensive minutes all while still creating success. He was physical, aggressive, and hard to play against. His leadership was just as impressive. Something in him clicked this season—perhaps it was the new coaching staff, or maybe just age—that revealed the qualities that got him the captaincy gig in the first place. Things just fell into place for the young Swede this season, and unlike a performance that looks unsustainable, you get the feeling you've just seen the start of something.

c6hor8: It's hard to give him only a B+ with his point total and his incredible captain abilities. The Avs success I think ties to his captainship. However, I want more scoring next year.

Mike: Whoo boy, another good season.  #2 in hits, #6 in PP points, 2nd in points, +21!!!, and only O'Reilly saw more ice time at forward. Still, I think he can be better, which is scary.  Scary good, that is.

Cheryl: So that was fun. I just love the way Landy's game is rounding out and continuing to improve. It's crazy to think that, even as mature as he was entering the league, we've seen him grow so much mentally the past few years. I shake my head when thinking about what he can still become.

c6hor8: I thought Landy was great all series, even if he played with a little more sand paper and a little less scoring.

Mike: 3 goals and an assist probably wasn't enough for my expectations.  He was on the victimized line, he took 21 shots, he was 0-fer on the PP, and he took some questionable penalties.  Still, for his first-post-season exposure at 21, the young captain did well.

Cheryl: There were times I would have liked to see the captain take over a game, create that mental force that would have secured the series for the team. However, given the fact it was his first foray into the NHL playoffs, I'll cut him some slack.

Preseason Thoughts

Earl: My breakout guy is Landeskog. Playing on a line with Stastny and Tangs, you know the puck will be right where it needs to be, the question is can he finish it off. I could see him putting up 40 goals easy.

AJ: Looking at this year’s team, I could see similar breakouts for Landy to turn into the star...From Landy, it’s pretty simple. I want 30 goals, 200 hits, crazygonuts advanced stats, and leadership literally oozing out of every single pore. Homie just got paid, time to show we didn’t just get played, ya dig?
