Final Grades 2014: Paul Stastny, #26

Stastny continued to do what he's always done: quietly be a bad ass. This season, though, more people noticed and realized how much the Avs really need him.

Doug Pensinger

Paul Stastny has spent his entire professional (non-lockout) career with the Avalanche. During that time, he has proven he has the talent and commitment to be a #1 center on most teams and a #2 on any team in the league. He does it all—5 v. 5, penalty kill, power play, defensive zone draws, face offs—and he does it all well. He's the kind of player that won't garner the awards, but he'll anchor a team to winning a Stanley Cup. A grizzled vet at only 28-years-old, Pauly Walnuts is a keeper.

SteveHouse: I didn't realize Paul shot 16.7% this year, wow. He played the toughs, effectively, with a revolving door of right wingers from bangers to rookies. Please don't let him walk, Roykic

c6hor8: Stastny played great all season. He was tasked with serious competition and excelled. He was a little streaky but his chemistry with Landy was beautiful. #SignStastny

Sandie: Pauly Walnuts is one of those guys that is easy to forget *just how good* they are. He is quiet, he is strong, he is good.

Mike: 60 points (25G/35A). 16.7% Shooting. 54% in the dot. 20 giveaways all year. 2nd in Assists per game. Best season since 2010. So much vision. Please stay, Paul!

Cheryl: Sign the man.

c6hor8: Looked great all series.

Mike: Lead the team (and series) in the post-season in most offensive categories. 5G/5A (one of which was just epic), PPG, PPA, SHG, OTGW, 38.5% SHOOTING!!! Only critique was that his line seemed to be on the ice for every even-strength goal against.

Cheryl: No. Seriously. Sign the man. Like fucking now.

Preseason Thoughts

Mike:

- If Stastny is used like it looks like he's gonna be used, he'll be the "big name" at the bottom of the points/goals heap.

- Part of me wished they'd made a decision on Stastny/O'Reilly, in that I wish that they had shipped out Pauly Walnuts for a good return. Not because he isn't one of the best all-around players on this team, but because he deserves better and the roster building with a couple of young scoring centers pushing him isn't doing him any favors.
