Decades ago Quebec City had a NHL team. The two Quebec teams battled hard, and battled each other. The owners of the Quebec Nordiques marketed themselves heavily as *the* French team of the NHL. They only did arena announcements in French. Hell, when The Rocket was their head coach, they introduced him to the fans - only the first name was needed and the crowd went nuts. They loved him. They loved the Nords. They loved hockey. Unfortunately, not everyone felt the love. The story of Lindros refusing to play for the team stung not only the fans, but even those who didn't follow hockey. Fast forward a few years and a team featuring Sakic, Foote and Forsberg was sold. Not only were they sold, but they were being moved! Moved to Colorado. Since that time Quebecers have been trying to get a team back in the city.
It's been years, but the Nords are finally heading back to La Belle Province and playing in their old stomping grounds... Quebec City. Okay, so they may not have the Nords logo on their chests when they take on Les Habitants tonight, but there will be a lot of fans searching their attics to wear the old logo to the game.
This will be a game that has some impact of the players. Tanguay was a Nords fan growing up, I can only imagine how badly he wants to play tonight.
This is the second game in two nights against Montreal, the general story line is the same. Guys on both teams are trying to show their coach why they should stay in the NHL. Players are playing against their former team and teammates. The difference is the location. And that's a great difference.
The Avs lost last night 3-2 in overtime. The Colorado goals came from Tyson Barrie and Gabriel Landeskog. Neither Briere or Tanguay played in that game. The game tonight starts at 7:30 ET/ 5:30 Mountain. It'll be broadcast on RDS and ALTITUDE! Pregame show starts at 5:00 pm.
