Avalanche Recall Calvin Pickard

With Semyon Varlamov's mystery injury lingering, the Avalanche recalled goalie Calvin Pickard from the AHL.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Mike Chambers of the Denver Post is reporting that the Avalanche have recalled netminder Calvin Pickard from the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League as a result of an apparently injury to starting goaltender Semyon Varlamov. The extent of the still unannounced injury is unknown.

Pickard, 22, has seen action in 15 games this season, 12 of them starts, and compiled a 6-6-3 record while putting up a sparkling 2.18 goals against average and a .936 save percentage, which was tops in the NHL when he was still qualified.

It is being reported right now that while Pickard has been recalled, Varlamov will participate in tomorrow morning's skate before the Avalanche host the visiting Los Angeles Kings to determine whether or not he will be able to play. Should Varlamov not be in a position to play, the starting role will go to either Pickard or "backup" Reto Berra, who has not started a game since November 25th.
