Avalanche 1st round pick from 2016 Mikko Rantanen was called up from San Antonio today. With Nate MacKinnon's apparent knee-on-knee hit in last night's game against Calgary, this is news more grave than joyful.
Rantanen currently sits 6th in AHL scoring with 21 goals and 31 assists in 44 games. He played 6 games for the Avs earlier in the year and if he dresses for 4 more he will use up the first year of his Entry-Level Contract. Not a decision the team would take lightly so he's either here short-term, which they specifically said they didn't want to do, or the situation is dire and they feel they will need him for the Avs remaining schedule.
