Nathan MacKinnon is fine after taking a stick to the eye against the Ducks

After a scary incident in the first period last night, Nathan MacKinnon is fine and is likely to play today.

Last night, Colorado Avalanche fans held their collective breath as they saw Nathan MacKinnon drop to the ice grasping at his face. MacKinnon took the blade of Anaheim Ducks forward Derek Grant up under the visor and right into the eye.

It was a scary scene It was a scary scene as the 2013 first-overall pick left the ice and didn’t return. Luckily, it appears MacKinnon has avoided any serious injury. He didn’t address the media postgame, but a number of his teammates spoke about the incident and mentioned that he will be fine.

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar mentioned that MacKinnon had lost vision in the eye temporarily but that it had returned - he even went as far as to say that MacKinnon is likely to play tonight as the team travels to Dallas to take on the Stars.

The good news came on the heels of a very impressive 3-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. The win put the Avs 4-1 on the season and in first place in the NHL at this very early stage of the season.
