It’s that glorious time of year. The NHL season is underway and we get our first taste of Colorado Avalanche hockey tonight.
The Avs are in New York for a season opener in Madison Square Garden against the Rangers but before they got on the plane to NYC, there was another roster move to be made. The Avs placed veteran forward Joe Colborne on waivers yesterday morning. The move came as a surprise since rosters had to be submitted to the league the previous night - if nothing else it’s odd timing.
In other roster news, it looks as though former Avalanche goalie Calvin Pickard could be on the trade block already.
No guarantee it's imminent by any means, but keep an eye on VGK as expansion team is in trade mode. May move a goalie (Pickard?) and a D.— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) October 5, 2017
After the Golden Knights picked up Malcolm Subban from waivers, it appeared that Pickards time in Vegas could be nearing an end. Carrying three goalies all year is far from optimal and shopping Pickard as a viable backup makes a lot of sense.
Back to the current Avs roster - there are going to be 12 first round picks in the lineup tonight, but does that mean they have the talent to turn the franchise around? [Denver Post]
From around the hockey world
The NHL season kicked off last night with two of the most exciting young teams in action - and neither disappointed. The Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs both won their openers while being led by the next wave of NHL stars.
Connor McDavid won the Hart Trophy last season, but as scary as it sounds, he looked even better last night. Scoring all three of Edmonton’s goals in a 3-0 win, Connor McDavid is going to absolutely terrorize opponents this season.
Down in the ECHL, the league announced yesterday that each team will wear a custom Marvel superheroes themed jersey at some point this season.
