NHL: Colorado Avalanche at New York Rangers Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

Well, the Colorado Avalanche season is underway and what a way to kick things off. The Avs went into Madison Square Garden and stole a win from the Rangers thanks to some incredible play by Semyon Varlamov. If last night’s game is any indication, this is going to be one exciting season. The Avs were clearly ok with trading scoring chances most of the game and it led to some high-paced .hockey

It seems like coach Bednar’s way of getting around a below average blueline is to play a brand of fire-wagon hockey that utilizes his team’s speed and skill - or maybe this was just a sloppy game that can be chalked up to early season rust. Either way, it was fun to watch and you can see the complete recap here.

The team will stay in the NYC area as they visit the Devils in a Saturday matinee before heading to Boston for the first of a home and home with the Bruins.

The Prospects

Last night, Conor Timmins didn’t record a point in the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds win, but he was absolutely dominant in every other aspect of the game. Timmins recorded 8 shots on net, leading all skaters on both teams. The young defender hasn’t missed a step this season and is proving that he should be recognized among the best defenders in the CHL.

Around the NHL

It looks as though an old friend has found himself on the NHL waiver wire.

After the Vegas Golden Knights picked up Malcolm Subban, it was only a matter of time before they cut ties with Pickacr - which is insane since Pickard is the better goalie of the two.

There is a very good chance he gets picks up by another team this morning, but don’t expect it to be the Avalanche. The team has decided to run with a veteran backup in Jonathan Bernier who is a better fit for this team and there simply isn’t room for a reunion.

Judging by how Antti Niemi played last night, the Penguins might take a long look at Pickard today. The Pittsburg backup was horrendous to start the game, giving up 4 goals on 9 shots before being pulled. The Blackhawks went on to embarrass the defending cup champions 10-1.

From that game, our very own Cat Silverman went in depth to breakdown Corey Crawford’s game for The Athletic.
