It was nice while it lasted for the host country Slovakia, as they were ousted by the always difficult Russians last night by a final score of 3-2. However, give Slovakia credit, they kept up with one of the best powerhouses in world of hockey until the very end.
It would be Russia who would get on the board first, as Ivan Chekhovich would wire a shot past Jura Sklenar to give the Russians the 1-0 lead. There would be no more goals in the first period, as it would be a close and hard fought battle.
Slovakia would be able to come up with the equalizer, as Adam Ruzicka would find the back of the net. A few minutes later, the Slovakians would continue to have a good period as they would get another goal only 4 minutes after the first of the period. Before you would know it, the Slovakians were going into the final frame with the 2-1 lead over Russia.
However, Russia would take advantage of a late penalty on Slovakia to equalize the game, as Chekhovich would get his second goal of the game. The game would remain tied for the remainder of the third period, and would need extra time. In overtime, it would be Kirill Slepets who would find the back of the net for the Russians.
The Russians are set to take on Finland in the semi-finals a few hours before the USA takes on Sweden on Saturday. Faceoff for the Russia vs Finland game will take place at 3:30pm (15:30 GMT+2).
