Avs Development Camp 2017 Hits the Ice

NHL: Colorado Avalanche at Minnesota Wild Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

For those of us that geek out on prospects and development this is a fun week. Not only do we get a new crop of youngsters but we also get some actual on-ice action to observe with them. For most of these guys it’s their introduction to the organization, what’s important to the staff and how they want things done.

Schedule - All activity here at Family Sports Center

Tuesday Morning: 4 groups skate individually in 45 minute sessions from 8am MT to around 1pm

Tuesday Afternoon: Everyone together from 3pm MT to 4:45pm

Wednesday: Same schedule

Thursday: Morning schedule same, off-ice activities in the afternoon

A good showing from our new draft class, 6 out of 7, missing only Igor Shvyryov. Everyone from the class of ‘16 is listed save Josh Anderson who is injured but in the area. Anderson spent several weeks with the Rampage at the end of the year so he’s had plenty of recent on-ice work with the staff. The 3 members of the class of ‘15 that are turning pro this year make up the rest of the Avs contingent. The rest of the roster is rounded out by eight camp invitees, which is a fairly large number compared to past years. Good on the amateur scouts for that. Let’s meet them.

Ty Lewis - 5’11 177# LW from the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Sami Moilanen - 5’8 185# RW from the Seattle Thunderbirds

Hugo Roy - 6’1 180# C from the Sherbrooke Phoenix

Brady Shaw - 6’2 200# LW from UVM but spent time with San Antonio at the end of the season

Desmond Bergin - 5’11 190# LHD from Greenville of the ECHL, spent 4 years at Harvard before that

Tom Gregoire - 5’11 175# RHD from the Sherbrooke Phoenix

Ryan Larkin - 6’1 200# Goalie from Miami (OH)

Francis Leclerc - 6’1 195# Goalie from the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada

Some of these fellows can sign and play in the AHL this season, which I presume to be part of the goal here. Instead of throwing out goal totals and whatnot I’m going to wait for anecdotal opinions to trickle in to get a feeling of why they might be here and what they can bring to the organization. Feel free to add, please.

BSN will have their usual diligent coverage plus good friends like tigervixxxen, Dario and Evan will have observations of course. For me, I want to know about the new draftees of course but getting a look at the college guys is the big deal. It’s the one time of the year the Avs can openly work with them. I’m especially interested in Cam Morrison since he wasn’t able to stick around for on-ice activities last year due to a school conflict. It’s entirely possible he leaves Notre Dame and turns pro next Spring.

If you are at the FSC, or have been there for a session, and want to post observations & thoughts we will all be eternally grateful. TIA.
