Colorado Avalanche prospect report: Travis Barron’s big weekend

Six points for the 67’s captain capped off a big week.

Conor Timmins is still injured, which is bad news for the Greyhounds, but the biggest news from the past week was Travis Barron lighting the lamp four times for the Ottawa 67’s over the weekend.

With the wins the 67’s climbed up into 7th in the OHL Eastern Conference, and a two point lead over 9th place.

It feels weird to say it, but with only three points last weekend Ty Lewis is slowing down. The Wheat Kings are holding onto a divisional playoff spot, and Lewis has 71 points in 47 games, but after that rocket start it’s feeling a bit average now. Silly, yes, but that’s the standard he set!

Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds

L 5-3 - Did Not Play
Jan. 20th: @ Flint Firebirds
L 4-2 - Did Not Play

Timmins was out last week, and the team felt it. Their 28 game point streak ended with a 27-0-1 record. Come back Conor, the Greyhounds need you!

#19 - Travis Barron (F) - 4G, 2A, +3
Ottawa 67’s - 19-21-3-2

Jan. 17th: vs Mississauga Steelheads
W 6-2 - 3G, 1A, +2

Jan. 20th: vs Hamilton Bulldogs
L 9-3 - 0G, 0A, -2
Jan. 21st: vs Peterborough Petes
W 6-1 - 1G, 1A, +3

Barron had a huge weekend, helping the 67’s solidify their spot in the playoffs.

Western Hockey League

#21 - Nick Henry (D) - 0G, 0A, -4
Regina Pats - 24-20-5-0

Jan. 17th: vs Prince Albert Raiders
W 4-3 - 0G, 0A, -1
Jan. 19th: vs Moose Jaw Warriors
L 5-3 - 0G, 0A, -3
Jan. 20th: @ Saskatoon Blades
L 4-3 OT - No Points

The Pats need more wins, it’s as simple as that. The Memorial Cup hosts are in a wild cup playoff spot, and anything that makes their path to the WHL more difficult, the worse they’ll look as hosts.

#3 - Josh Anderson (D) - 0G, 1A, -2
Swift Current Broncos - 33-11-3-1

Jan. 17th: @ Tri-City Americans
W 3-2 OT - 0G, 0A, +1
Jan. 19th: @ Portland Winterhawks
W 5-3 - 0G, 1A
Jan. 20th: @ Seattle Thunderbirds
L 7-6 SO - 0G, 0A, -1
Jan. 21st: @ Everett Silvertips
L 4-1 - 0G, 0A, -2

The Broncos split their southern road trip with two wins and two losses. Anderson has fit in well on the Broncos blue line.

#14 - Ty Lewis (F) - 1G, 2A, -3
Brandon Wheat Kings - 28-15-3-1

Jan. 17th: @ Spokane Chiefs
L 3-0 - 0G, 0A, -1
Jan. 19th: @ Tri-City Americans
L 4-3 OT - 0G, 2A, -1
Jan. 20th: @ Everett Silvertips
L 4-0 - 0G, 0A, -1
Jan. 21st: @ Portland Winterhawks
L 4-3 - 1G, 0A

The trip to the US wasn’t a good one for the Wheat Kings, who made the 5,000 kilometer round trip to lose four straight games.

Junior A

#4 - Nick Leivermann (D)
Penticton Vees, BCHL

Leivermann has had surgery and will be out for the next 3-4 weeks.

USHL

#27 - Nathan Clurman (D) - 0G, 0A, -4
Des Moines Buccaneers - 12-17-2-1

Jan. 16th: @ Lincoln Stars
L 5-3 - 0G, 0A, -2
Jan. 19th: @ Omaha Lancers
W 3-0 - No Points
Jan. 20th: vs Omaha Lancers
L 5-1 - Did Not Play
Jan. 21st: vs Cedar Rapids RoughRiders
L 2-1 OT - 0G, 0A, -2

Clurman and the Bucs didn’t have a great weekend, lots of chances for the opponents, and 3 losses in four games. They’re currently sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference.

NCAA

#16 - Cale Makar (D) - 0G, 0A, -1
UMass-Amherst Minutemen
Overall: 11-11-1 / Conference: 5-7-1

Jan. 19th: vs Northeastern
W 3-0 - 0G, 0A, +1
Jan. 20th: @ Northeastern
L 5-0 - 0G, 0A, -2

The two teams traded home ice shutouts, but Northeastern got more past the goalie.

#25 - Denis Smirnov (F)
Penn State Lions
Overall: 13-10-3 / Conference: 6-7-3

Jan. 19th: @ Michigan
L 4-0 - 0G, 0A, -1
Jan. 20th: @ Michigan
L 3-2 - No Points

Nothing good for the Lions last weekend, Smirnov went pointless over a weekend in what may be the first time this season.

#26 - Cameron Morrison (F) - 0G, 1A, -1
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Overall: 19-4-1 / Conference: 13-1-0

Jan. 19th: vs Wisconsin
W 4-2 - 0G, 1A, +1
Jan. 21st: vs Wisconsin
L 5-0 - 0G, 0A, -2

The Irish finally lost a conference game, and it was a big one, 5-0 to the Badgers.

#15 - Shane Bowers
Boston University Terriers
Overall: 11-11-2 / Conference: 9-7-2

Jan. 19th: @ Merrimack
W 4-3 - 1G, 1A, +2
