With eight days left in the NHL’s regular season, the Colorado Avalanche find themselves in a position no one would have predicted back in September. The Avs can play their way into the playoffs.
Colorado controls their own destiny. Win the final four games of the season and you’re in the playoffs.
The Western Conference Wildcard race is now down to three teams. The Anaheim Ducks, St. Louis Blue and Colorado Avalanche have one week to decide two playoff positions. The Ducks currently hold a one-point advantage over the Blues and Avs, but the Blues have a game in hand.
With a road trip through California, the Avalanche probably have the toughest schedule of the three. Though, a win in Anaheim tomorrow and the Avs are definitely in the driver’s seat - especially since Colorado holds the tiebreaker over the Ducks.
There isn’t a lot of time left, but there are still a number of scenarios that exist for each of these teams to get into the playoffs. The only thing that is for certain, is that if the Avalanche win out, they’re in.
It might be the most stressful situation possible, but it would be pretty wild to have the entire season come down to the final game.
Next Saturday, Blues vs Avs at the Pepsi Center for all the marbles. That be a heck of a lot of fun.
