54 players will step onto the ice on Friday September 15th to kick off the Colorado Avalanche’s training camp. There are 31 forwards, 18 defensemen, and five goaltenders at camp.
AHLer Cody Bass — formerly from the Nashville Predators organization — has signed a Professional Try-Out (PTO) with the club. Matthew Bouchard, who played for the Avalanche in the Vegas Rookie Faceoff over the past four days, has also joined the camp on an Amateur Try-Out (ATO).
There is no commitment on players with PTOs and ATOs, any of the 31 teams can sign him at any time.
Veteran Rule
For preseason games, the NHL has a “veteran rule” in order to have a competitive product during those training games. Pension Plan Puppets did a nice quick rundown of the rules, which are outlined below.
- Skaters who played 30 NHL games the previous year
- Goalies who dressed in 50 NHL games or played in 30 NHL games the previous year
- Any player who has played 100 or more NHL games
- A current year first round pick
20 skaters, 2 goaltenders, and Martin Kaut are considered “veterans” for the Avalanche.
