To Hall or not to Hall

So MacKinnon just came out and said he is going to take a below market contract after this one is up in order to win. I don’t know about you, but my hopes are way up. Like ridiculously, and probably unjustifiably high. If this is really the case though, then why are we even talking about "if" the Avs get Taylor Hall? It’s obviously just a question of when.

That said, I know there are still many who are against the acquisition. I even went back and forth for a little while. As it stand today though, I am firmly on the Hall bandwagon. A team that includes MacKinnon, Rantanen, Hall, Landeskog, Newhook, Makar, Byram, Girard, etc.? That sounds like fun.

Still, I am always thinking and wondering how the team would look with this guy or that, so I thought it would be fun to compare a couple scenarios.

Scenario #1: Taylor Hall Bitches

The Big Kahuna. Yeah he’ll be expensive, but maybe he has similar thoughts as MacKinnon and will take a little less to win. Of all the destinations he could end up, Colorado provides the best shot at glory over the life of his next contract. And really, what are you gonna do with $80 million before taxes that you can’t with $69 million or so? How many Lamborghinis or private islands does one really need, and isn’t it better than getting your name inscribed on the Cup multiple times? That’s something money can’t buy.

Let’s say it happens. Well, here is what that looks like… Maybe… Hopefully.

2019/2020

Before the deadline, the Avs send Cole, Kaut, and their next two firsts to New Jersey for Taylor Hall. Hell, throw in another pick, prospect, or a young guy like Kamenev if need be, as the team can afford to do so. The key is, to me anyway, that it’s important to try and use picks and prospects rather than roster players to get this done. There are certainly other ways to do it, but this is the route I’d try to take so the disruption to the current team is as minimal as possible.

Why would New Jersey do this? Well, the two firsts are obviously desirable, and Kaut is still a very young prospect who I believe they liked in his draft year. Maybe they feel he just hasn’t hit his stride yet, which is certainly a possibility. Cole, while not necessarily fitting the mold of a rebuilding team, adds some stability and experience to the defense and fills a need for the Devils. Maybe it’s not a long term play with Cole, but GMs often feel like they need someone who can teach young players how to win in this league. Cole brings that.

At the end of the day though, there is some wiggle room. All I ask in terms of prospects is that the team holds onto Byram, Timmins, and Newhook. I think these guys are key to the future, and I don’t want to see them go. I’d be open to other scenarios or pieces such as Rosen, Graves, Kamenev, Bowers, and maybe even Zadorov or Jost, but I will be sad if one of the top three prospects is lost.

Anyway, with Cole gone, I have Timmins sliding onto the third pairing, but Rosen is also available. Whoever wins out gets the job. And quite frankly, I don’t think the drop off is much at all. Cole’s experience will be missed, but the team doesn’t need it as much as they did last season, and both Timmins and Rosen are capable players.

Here is what the team looks like if this were to happen. Pretty badass if you ask me. That third line could be dangerous and should draw favorable matchups night in and night out.

2020/2021

The team is mostly unchanged this year, but there are a few moves. Namely,

-

Byram makes the jump and replaces Barberio (Graves becomes the 7th defenseman).

-Bowers also makes the jump, replacing Nieto.

The team also has a lot of work to do on extensions, which you can see below. In the end it works though (depending on what Hall askes for), and the Avs should be one of the best teams in the league.

Notice the conservative assumptions for the cap increase. Lost in the Hall buzz and everything else is that there are reasons to believe it may actually increase more than previously thought. I’m sticking with the below though for illustration purposes.

Also note that I’m giving Jost an unreasonably high dollar figure in exchange for one extra year. A two year deal is probably more likely, but I’m going for four based on my projections of the cap situation over this time horizon. Either it’s a slightly bad contract or he blows up and makes it a great one. Either way, it’s a risk I might be willing to take.

2021/2022

There is a little disruption this year in that someone is lost to Seattle. Unlike past illustrations, I’m keeping Zadorov around for the foreseeable future. We have seen a lot of good Z lately, and that dude wins me over when he’s playing well. Plus his contract might fit. Unfortunately, under my assumptions, Johnson’s contract does not. He’ll need to be traded before the expansion draft so that the following can occur.

Forwards Protected: MacKinnon, Landeskog, Rantanen, Hall, Kadri, Burakovsky, Jost

Defensemen Protected: Girard, Makar, Zadorov

Forwards Exposed: Donskoi, Compher, Kamenev, Nichushkin

Defensemen Exposed: Graves, Rosen

Lost: Donskoi or Compher (either way they are replaced by Newhook)

Yes I protected Jost, and no I won’t apologize for it. I like this kid and I think he turns it on one of these days. If he doesn’t, then the end result is the same anyway (one of Donskoi or Compher is lost), so I choose optimism. Obviously it’s possible that he ends up being exposed though and maybe even ends up following the William Karlsson path.

Regardless of whether it’s Jost, Compher, or Donskoi that ends up being lost, the good news is that this kid named Alex Newhook is ready to join the team. Hopefully he turns into the stud I think he can be and the Avs being even better than before. Either way, the timeline is kinda perfect, and losing a good forward will feel less painful with him ready to step in.

Expansion draft aside, we have to say goodbye to Bellemare and Calvert. With Nieto lost the prior year and Donskoi going to Seattle, the bottom six looks quite different. It still looks pretty good though.

2022/2023

Things stabilize a bit after the Seattle thing. At some point we hope Annunen will join the team as the goalie of the future, so that’s probably the biggest change for this season. I have Graves moving on as well, as he will likely have a better opportunity to play and get paid elsewhere. Let’s pause and give Sakic some credit on that trade. Graves has turned into a solid NHL defenseman, while Bigras continues to struggle to get his opportunity. I think most of us were pretty indifferent about the Bigras for Graves swap, but there has been a clear winner in the end (up to this point anyway).

MacKinnon signs for 8 more years at $8 million AAV. Just kidding, but it’s less than McDavid, and that’s what matters. The window is still open and will be for a while. The bottom line is this. If the team thinks Hall can perform at anywhere near his Hart level for the next 4-5 years, then get him. It works from a cap perspective. At worst, maybe they lose Jost or Zadorov, but can anyone really argue that even with such loss this team isn’t better with Hall? I don’t think so. Plus it’s gonna happen, so might as well just get on board.

Scenario #2: Moneyball with Toffoli

Most of this is the same. I went with the same dollars and term on all the contracts, so the end result is basically more wiggle room on the cap. The team will also have more picks and prospect though, so keep that in mind. The expansion result is also different, which we’ll soon see. The bottom line is that two guys who weren’t around long term in the Hall scenario (Donskoi and Johnson), both stay for the foreseeable future.

Here we go.

2019/2020

Cole and Kaut are traded for Toffoli. It’s not the big move some are hoping for, but I think it could be a good one. While the names aren’t as flashy, the depth of the forward group is such that this team is a contender. And the cap is nowhere near a concern now or any point in the foreseeable future.

2020/2021

The only difference here, besides the line combinations, is Toffoli at $4.5 million rather than Hall at $9.85 million. I think the big thing is that there is room for higher contracts to guys like Zadorov, Burakovsky, etc. if that’s needed. My projections are maybe a bit on the optimistic side for some of these guys, so that could be a good thing.

2021/2022

The difference this year is the expansion draft. Donskoi is protected and Toffoli isn’t. This results in the newest acquisition being lost to Seattle. In this scenario, Johnson would need to waive his NMC so that Zadorov can be protected. Assuming Seattle wasn’t likely to take him, I honestly think he would be willing to do this, as he is a team first kind of guy.

Here is what we’re looking at in this scenario. Again, the biggest differences vs the Hall scenario are this:

-Donskoi in, Hall out

-Johnson stays (Rosen is who knows where)

-More cap flexibility

2023/2024

This is when Johnson’s contract is up. I see him as being bumped down the depth chart by this time, so it’s possible he could stick around at a lower contract. I’m penciling in Helleson though for illustration purposes, as I think he has a good shot at being an NHL caliber defenseman. The only other thing of note is that Donskoi stays at a decent raise.

Bottom Line

How much do you value Erik Johnson and cap flexibility? If it’s a lot, then opt for a guy like Toffoli. If it’s not as much, then Hall is the play.

Of course it’s not all that simple, as you can easily argue my projections are flawed (spoiler alert: they are). Vote in the poll below and comment if you’d like. I’m always interested to hear other opinions.
