With only a few weeks before Colorado Avalanche training camp gets underway, the team has announced their roster for the Rookie Faceoff Tournament in Anaheim, California. Headlining the group will be former first round picks Bowen Byram, Martin Kaut and Shane Bowers.
The group brings a nice blend of older players with AHL experience (Logan O’Connor, Igor Shvyrev, Ty Lewis), recent draft picks who look to impress before heading back to junior this season (Luka Burzan, Sasha Mutula, Alex Beaucage) and undrafted guys who were around at Development camp and deserve a second look (Logan Barlage, Navrin Mutter, Samuel Regis).
One new name on the list is Joe Wegwerth. A 23-year old winger, originally drafted 92nd overall by the Florida Panthers, Wegwerth became a free agent this summer after playing four years at Notre Dame. The hulking power forward was on the verge of a breakout season (7 goals and 11 points in his first 12 games) with the Irish when he had his college career cut short by a knee injury this past January. He will look to win a professional contract with his performance at the tournament.
