With their playoff lives on the line, the Colorado Avalanche were completely dominant in the first period of Game 5. After scoring five goals before they allowed five shots on net, the Avalanche were able to coast to a 6-3 victory despite missing both of their goalies due to injury.
Just before game time, we were all met with the surprise that Michael Hutchinson would be getting the start for the Avs - his first NHL playoff start. Pavel Francouz was ruled “unfit to play” so Hunter Miska got the backup assignment. The Avalanche forward came out as if they knew they didn’t want the game to come down to goaltending.
The Avs are going to need to have a similarly impressive start tonight in order to put the elimination nerves to bed.
Game 5 got really chippy by the end. If nothing else, we should expect tonight’s to be a very physical and intense game.
Like with Game 5, Coach Bednar is not tipping his hand when it comes to the lineup but he continues to maintain that the injured players are not expected back any time soon - that includes in net.
Gabriel Landeskog - Nathan MacKinnon - Mikko Rantanen
Andre Burakovsky - Nazem Kadri - Valeri Nichushkin
Tyson Jost - JT Compher - Vladislav Namestnikov
Matt Nieto - Pierre-Edouard Bellemare - Logan O’Connor
Ryan Graves - Cale Makar
Samuel Girard - Ian Cole
Kevin Connauton - Nikita Zadorov
Ben Bishop got the start in net for Game 5 and it was a disaster. He didn’t make it through the first period so we should expect the Stars to go back to Anton Khudobin tonight.
