Avalanche trade for Devan Dubnyk

The Avalanche add another piece of goaltending depth to the side

Trader Joe is at it once again.

On Saturday afternoon, it was made known that the Avalanche had traded for Devan Dubnyk from the San Jose Sharks. Going the other way to the Sharks will be Greg Pateryn and a 2021 5th-round pick. The news was first broken by Kevin Weekes.

A night after a stellar shutout performance by the now current back-up Jonas Johansson, Dubnyk will be brought it to continue to try and help with goaltending depth. Dubnyk will back up Phillip Grubauer on nights off, perhaps in a heated battle for the backup spot with Johansson.

The former Minnesota Wild netminder will come to the Avs coming off a pretty steep downfall he has suffered the last two years of his career. After sloping downhill in Minnesota, he was traded to the Sharks before the start of the 2021 season.

In San Jose this year, he has played 17 games with a .898 SV%, with 3.18 GAA. He has a 3-9-2 record in net for a struggling San Jose side. In his career, he has a .914 SV% with 2.60 GAA, and an overall record of 250-204-54.

While his best days are behind him, Dubnyk will bring in some more veteran experience to a young team hungry for a Stanley Cup in the upcoming NHL playoffs. Johansson is still very young, and Dubnyk could be used a teaching tool for the youngster for the rest of the season, but it is currently unknown how Jared Bednar will use Dubnyk in his side.

The 34-year old will probably join the Avalanche in Anaheim just a short flight down from Northern California. However, it is unknown if he will be in the squad for Sunday afternoon’s match-up with the Ducks.

Going the other way is the short-lived Avalanche player Pateryn. With a recent move to bring Patrick Nemeth back to the Avs, Pateryn will be traded for a second time this season to Northern California. In his short tenure, he has been in and out of the squad and struggled in the team.

While Dubnyk’s best days are behind him, perhaps a new environment will liven him up and bring back some glory days for him here and there in some chances he gets in net with the Avs the rest of the season. Welcome to the Avalanche Devan Dubnyk!
