Morning Flurries: MacKinnon named first star of the month

There was nobody better in the month of December.

  • It was quite a December to remember for Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon who expectedly earned star of the month honors from the NHL. He lead the league with the longest point streak of the season at 19 games and set a franchise record for points in a month with a perfectly fitting 29. Other fun achievements he hit were the only Avalanche hat trick of the season thus far en route to the first four-goal game from an Avalanche player in their history.

If there was an award for calendar year honors MacKinnon would be in the running for that too as no player even touched his 5-on-5 production of 80 points (Connor McDavid had only 59 points). If this dominance continues MacKinnon is going to have a realistic shot at the Hart trophy.

  • Elsewhere, the PWHL has started their inaugural season with the ladies of New York defeating Toronto in their first game.
  • A big upset in the quarterfinal stage of the World Junior Championship as Canada lost to Czechia 3-2. Team USA defeated Latvia 7-2 to move on to the semi-finals. After a one day break it will be Sweden vs. Czechia and then USA vs. Finland to find out who makes it to the gold medal game.
