COL vs CAR - Goal 4 - The one where backpedaling leads to a Tanguay master-level goal.

So I'm sitting here trying to figure out a way to tell you all that doing Goal Anatomies this season will be a real bitch (thanks to the new video viewer on NHL.com) and you should all thank me profusely whenever I provide one. But I don't want to sound like an over-bearing ass, so I'll try to come up with some witty jokes at the expense of two of the top defensemen on the Hurricane squad.

We pick up the action last night in the 2nd period where Andre Benoit has just accepted a pass from his defensive partner, Cory Sarich, behind his own blue line. Benoit is patient with the puck as he drifts toward the bench side boards as he waits for the forwards (consisting of SLAP FIGHT! + Downie) to get on-side and wheel back for the pass. Matt Duchene is just off-screen coming out of the offensive zone and Ryan O`Reilly and Sarich are in good position to receive the pass. Seeing Steve Downie go off for a change after applying the forecheck that led to the long pass that Sarich intercepted, Hurricanes forward Elias Lindholm (#16) also goes for a change. Alex Tanguay has jumped on for Downie.

Benoit hits a wheeling Matt Duchene just this side of the redline (everybody wave to Brett Sutter #42 and Nathan Gerbe #14. We won't see them for a while). Eric Staal (#12) is now on the ice to get a minus.

Duchene then begins to drive toward the middle of the ice as the recently arrived Tanguay makes this a straight up 2-on-2 against Carolina defensemen Justin Faulk (#27) and Andrej Sekera (#4 who it turns out is NOT a refuge from Dragonball). The collective atmosphere behind the defensemen is a veritable vacuum due to an increasingly rampant condition spreading throughout the NHL: Rectus Ducheneiopia.

Duchene sells the lane drive (pulling Faulk and Sekera a little more to the middle of the ice)...

...but PSYCH!! He's really going wide you guys.

Duchene uses his mad skillz (also know as his off-hand and ass) to drive to the faceoff dot to the left of Canes de facto netminder Justin Peters.

Perhaps due to some established tendency, everyone is showing Duchene a ton of respect on this play as Faulk, Sekera and Peters all have their back-up horns on blast. Duchene fulfills the prophecy with a psuedo spin, but instead of pyloning Sekera (who is in the perfect position for it, let's be honest)...

... he punks them all with a little of that sweet, sweet, Haliburton, Ontario sauce!!! Although in a decent position to break up the pass, Faulk was apparently caught completely off-guard since he, you know, failed to do just that.

Mr. Quality-Not-Quantity decides that the humiliation for the Hurricanes needs to be master level, so he goes for the rare DOUBLE FIVE HOLE goal!

Remember kids, numbers don't lie, but liars use numbers.

That's a pretty sweet goal as Peters spins through the crease. The 2-goal lead is re-established, Duchene's dominance is confirmed, and all is right with the world.

Gabe Landeskog shows true leadership by sneaking into the celebration so that Duchene doesn't have to ignore O'Reilly.

Coach Patrick Roy gave the boys a simple message about playing against a green goaltender: get pucks on net. The plan paid off.

First Period

After an uneventful seven minutes, play started to pick up for the Avalanche. The Carolina Hurricanes got the first couple of chances, but it was all Avs who were kept off the board only because of some impressive play by Carolina goaltender Justin Peters. At the 8:30 mark, Jan Hejda lost a bit of footing, but recovered enough to send the puck up to center ice. Alex Tanguay and Paul Stastny jumped on the opportunity and generated a two-on-one. Tangs sent the puck over to Stastny, whose rebound bounced to the top edge of the crease where a cruising Erik Johnson banked the puck home off his skate. The play was reviewed but ended up standing.

Carolina took that as a challenge and came back with some gusto, but Ryan Murphy fumbled the puck at the Hurricane's blueline. As he reached back to get it, he hit the ice and got his stick under Steve Downie, sending Crazy Eyes sliding up the ice. That was enough to get a tripping penalty but not until after Peters robbed Matt Duchene with a point blank chance. The first clearing attempt on the penalty went flying out of play without touching the glass, putting the Avs two men up on the power play (delay of game). Unfortunately, the boys weren't able to capitalize on the opportunity.

At the 17:32 mark, Duchene did some dippity dos behind the net, making Riley Nash look foolish, and stuffed the puck under Peters' pads to give the boys a two-goal lead. The play wouldn't have happened without some heads up play by Andre Benoit in the defensive zone and pure hard work by Downie and Ryan O'Reilly to get the puck deep into the zone. Shortly thereafter, Gabe Landeskog took a slashing penalty, giving the Hurricanes a power play for the remaining two minutes of the first frame. Solid PKing kept the score 2-0.

Second Period

It didn't take the Hurricanes long to cut the lead in half. Just 12 seconds, in fact. Defenseman Andrej Sekera sent a beauty of a stretch pass up to Jordan Staal who slid the puck over to local boy Drayson Bowman. Bowman whistled a nice little wrister past Avs goaltender Semyon Varlamov for a 2-1 score. The goal shifted momentum to Carolina.

The surge for the Hurricanes didn't last long. Line after line for the Avs started pummeling the visitors with shots, controlling the puck like bosses. Play mercifully stopped when the puck flew out of the zone. For nearly three minutes, the burgundy and blue boys kept the puck in the offensive zone. Talk about possession.

The Avalanche waves kept coming, and Duchene continued his clinic. It eventually paid dividends as he completely beat defenseman Sekera to send a saucer pass to Tanguay, who was sliding into the slot. One timer and the Avs were up by two again.

With 3:48 left in the period, Jaime McGinn took a tripping penalty, giving the Hurricanes their second power play of the night. As with the first, the Avs killed the penalty without much trouble. It would be the Avs on the power play to finish the period, though, as Landeskog powered through a couple of the Hurricanes' D, forcing Justin Faulk to take a hooking penalty. Going into the locker room, the game remained 3-1.

Third Period

The boys started out the third on the power play, and this time it panned out. Duchene used his new-found strength on his skates to out muscle Jordan Staal and sent a wrister right over Peters' glove, extending the lead to three. That lead didn't last long . Sekera pinched down low and with all the room in the world sniped one past Varly, putting the score at 4-2.

Almost ten minutes passed with few moments of interest, but then Patrick Bordeleau took a stupid boarding penalty behind the Hurricanes' net, as far as one can be from your own zone. Carolina put pressure on early and often and forced Varly to make his best save of the night, committing grand larceny on Alexander Semin. Hurricanes couldn't get much going after that, though, and the Avs held on for the 4-2 win.

MHH Three Stars

1. Matt Duchene (2g, 1a, sick sick sick)

2. Alex Tanguay (1g, 1a)

3. Paul Stastny (1a, 71% at the dot, 20:20 TOI)

Honorable mentions: Justin Peters (score could've been 10-1 by end of second if it wasn't for the rookie goaltender); Semyon Varlamov (despite little action and shaky play to start, finished strong with .933 save percentage); Andre Benoit (heads up play led to two different goals), John Mitchell (went 7 for 10 on the face off, tenacious little shit), Erik Johnson (goal, 20:33 TOI, 3 shots on net)

Dishonorable mention: the ice (wow, was it bad)

Carolina (4-3-3) come to town on the second leg of a back to back tonight to take on the Avs (8-1-0).

The Avalanche return to action tonight after a few days off following a pretty ugly win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Defenseman Erik Johnson took a shot off the foot in practice on Wednesday and was described by Coach Roy as "doubtful" for the game, but ultimately will be a game time decision. Tyson Barrie would start in his place. According to Dater, he slotted in next to Jan Hejda in practice (who Patrick Roy praised the shit out of in his presser), so there's your likely pairing. Semyon Varlamov should start in the crease tonight.

Matt Duchene is scoring at a point a game pace with six goals and three assists. P.A. Parenteau and Nathan MacKinnon follow him with seven points each. Gabe Landeskog has three goals himself, one in each of the Avs' last three games (including the only goal against the Penguins).

Know Thine Enemy

Carolina took on the Minnesota Wild last night and lost 3-1, but more importantly for tonight, lost goaltender Cam Ward for a few weeks with a lower body injury. Justin Peters stepped in in his place, as Anton Khudobin is already out with an injury of his own. Hockey Bieber Jeff Skinner leads the way for the Canes in scoring, with 9 points in 9 games. Eric Staal is behind him with 7. (I can never remember whether he's Sporty Staal or Scary Staal.) Carolina are currently second in the unfortunately named (and also quite bad) Metropolitan division, with 11 points.
